Sporting Organization Recognizes District

The Wheelin’ Sportsmen, which is part of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), recently honored the District during the NWTF’s 30th Annual Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tennessee.

The District received the 2005 Agency Achievement Award and the Patron Life Sponsor Award for its partnership with the organization. The partnership allows disabled outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy the wilderness by taking part in planned events throughout the year, including a variety of game hunts and a fishing derby.

“The program benefits the volunteers as well as the disabled,” said Paul Elliott, senior land management specialist. “Everyone involved develops a strong bond with one another.”

In addition to the honor received at the national convention, Mike Blanton, regional coordinator for the Wheelin’ Sportsmen, thanked the District and its employees during a chapter banquet in Wildwood, Florida, for their dedication to making the project a success.

“The successful partnership we have with the District is the prototype for all other potential partnerships with government agencies,” said Blanton.

Those who participate in Wheelin’ Sportsmen events are preselected through an application process. For more information about participating in future events, visit the National Wild Turkey Federation web site at www.nwtf.org.
