Florida-Friendly Landscaping Included In Bob Vila Project

Florida-friendly landscaping techniques will be featured along with storm-ready home design in an upcoming television episode of “Bob Vila’s Home Again.”

The episode focuses on rebuilding a Punta Gorda Isles home destroyed during Hurricane Charley. Vila and his construction crew teamed up with FLASH, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, to rebuild the home. They invited Angela Polo, Sarasota Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Builder/Developer Coordinator, to assist in the landscaping design and plant selection.

“We’re thrilled Bob Vila and his team thought to include Florida-friendly landscaping in the program,” said Polo. “Hopefully more Floridians will follow suit when they see how easy it is to incorporate these practices.”

“Bob Vila’s Home Again” can be seen in the Tampa Bay area on WFTS Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. and on WTVT Sundays at 6:30 a.m. It is seen in Sarasota on WWSB. The episode featuring Florida-friendly landscaping and the Punta Gorda home is expected to air sometime in November.

The District provides funding for education outreach to builders and developers in Charlotte, Manatee and Sarasota counties through the University of Florida’s Florida Yards & Neighborhoods (FYN) Program. Ten counties within the District receive funding to educate homeowners, builders and developers, landscape and irrigation professionals, and students on Florida-friendly landscaping. By following the nine FYN principles, residents can act in ways that protect the watershed in which they live.
