Some people dive for treasure, Adam Hange dives for trash.
The Field Services supervisor recently participated in the Dive Against Debris event at Spanish Rock Reef in Holmes Beach in Manatee County. The event is sponsored by the Tampa Bay Green Consortium and uses volunteers to remove trash from Gulf water.
Hange and the other divers retrieved 35 pounds of trash during the event, significantly less than prior dives. Past dive cleanups in Tampa Bay recently removed about 200 to 400 pounds of trash.
“You have to think that if we are seeing less trash, we are heading in the right direction,” Hange said. “People are more aware of their surroundings and picking up trash. The goal is to find no trash.”
