A water conservation project funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Pinellas County will reduce demand and conserve potable water.The project encourages the use of the surficial aquifer, Floridan aquifer, and surface water from lakes, ponds, rivers and streams for non-potable applications, such as lawn irrigation. The Southwest Florida Water Management District will be conducting “controlled, prescribed burns” during January and February on the Prairie-Shell Creek property. The Charlotte County site is west of U.S. Hwy. 17 and east of the Peace River, approximately 8 miles northeast of Punta Gorda. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has teamed up with the City of St. Petersburg to help restaurants conserve water by replacing the pre-rinse spray valves on dishwashing equipment.The St. Petersburg Spray Valve Replacement Project will replace approximately 500 conventional high water use spray valves at no cost to the establishment. Governing Board Tightens Water Restrictions in the Tampa Bay Area to Conserve Extremely Low Water Supplies »
The District’s Governing Board voted unanimously in October to tighten water restrictions in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. From a lazy ride with cool breezes on the Peace River to a cross-eyed possum to a warm hike through pine flatwoods, 120 people learned what Deep Creek Preserve has to offer at the “Get Outside!” event April 10. The District is restoring an area of the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park canoe launch in Hernando County.
