Don’t miss Hillsborough County’s hiking spree featuring numerous District lands. The hiking spree encourages residents and visitors to get out and explore the county’s parks.
Edward Medard Conservation Park, Flatwoods Conservation Park, Alafia River Corridor Nature Preserve – North and Cypress Creek Nature Preserve are all involved in the event. The spree began December 1 and is open through April 30.

Guided tours and nature education programs are offered throughout the spree at many of the parks and preserves. Edward Medard Conservation Park will host a guided hike Jan. 17, 2025, led by Alyssa Vinson, UF/IFAS Extension Urban Forestry agent, who will discuss identifying trees, their benefits and more. The trail is around two miles and participants must be at least 10 years old. The event is $5. A list of items to bring include bug spray, closed-toe shoes, a hat and water in a reusable water bottle. Binoculars or a camera are optional.
Cypress Creek Nature Preserve will present Mary Keith from the Tampa Audubon Society Feb. 2. She will lead an educational hike as participants look for the birds that call Cypress Creek home. The 2,500-acre nature preserve features hardwood forests, swamps, pine flatwoods, wet prairies, cypress stands and freshwater marshes. Many of these habitats are showcased on the 3.3-mile Swamp River Ramble trail – where the hike will take place. The event costs $5.
Prizes are given out for individuals who complete eight or more hikes. These prizes include a “I Completed The 2024-2025 Hiking Spree” sticker and a patch, medallion or a bandana for your dog!
