Storm drain improvements slated for Lake Coronado area

News Release

A project funded by the Southwest Florida Management District and St. Petersburg will improve drainage in the Lake Coronado area, which is located in south St. Petersburg.

The project involves constructing a bypass conduit around Lake Coronado, which will direct stormwater runoff from the westerly portion of the watershed around Lake Coronado; new outfall structures from both Lake Coronado and Lake Catalina; and a new conveyance and collection system under 60th Avenue South to address chronic flooding conditions in the area. The proposed system is a series of box culverts in various sizes.

This project is part of a stormwater management master plan the District and the city funded in 1994 that identified projects that would help control flooding in the area. This project will improve conveyance and provide additional storage within the watershed.

The city is responsible for all phases of the project, design, permitting and construction, as well as hiring consultants and contractors.

The project is estimated to cost up to $2.5 million. Funding will be divided evenly between the Pinellas-Anclote River Basin Board and St. Petersburg.

The project is expected to be complete by July 2008.
