Save Water Indoors During Water Conservation Month

News Release

Did you know that you can save hundreds of gallons of water per month by only running your washing machine and dishwater when they're full? This simple step, along with the other tips below, can significantly reduce your indoor water consumption and your monthly water bill.

While the "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ advocates water conservation year-round, an extra effort is being made to promote conservation throughout April. Governments and water management districts throughout the state have declared April Water Conservation Month because April is traditionally one of the driest months of the year and typically marks the peak demand season for public water suppliers.

During April the District will provide simple water conservation tips that the average resident can use. Here are some tips on saving water indoors:

* Leaks are the biggest water waster. Take a few minutes to find out if you have a leak in your home.
* Install low-flow showerheads, faucets and toilets.
* Take shorter showers – 5 minutes or less.
* Scrape, don't rinse, your dishes before loading in the dishwasher.
* Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator or microwave, not under running water.
* Use the shortest clothes washing cycle for lightly soiled loads; normal and permanent press wash cycles use more water.
* Replace leaky drain plugs in sinks and bathtubs.

Consider water-efficient clothes and dish washers when it's time to replace your current appliances. A water-efficient washing machine uses an average of 27 gallons of water per load. Older and non-water-efficient washing machines can use as much as 43 gallons of water per load. A water-efficient dish washer uses seven gallons per load compared to older non-water-efficient models that use up to 12 gallons per load.
