Save water indoors during Water Conservation Month

News Release

Did you know that you can save hundreds of gallons of water per month by only running your washing machine and dishwater when it is full? This simple step, along with the other tips below, can significantly "reduce your indoor water consumption(Saving water indoors)":http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/conservation/indoors and your monthly water bill.

While the "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":http://watermatters.org advocates "water conservation(Water conservation)":http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/conservation/ year-round, an extra effort is being made to promote conservation throughout April. Governments and water management districts throughout the state have declared April Water Conservation Month because April is traditionally one of the driest months of the year and typically marks the peak demand season for public water suppliers.

Each week the District will provide a couple of simple water conservation tips that the average resident can use. This week the concentration is on indoor behaviors and appliances.

* You can save up to 250 gallons of water per month by rinsing fruit and veggies in a bowl of water instead of under running water.

* Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator or microwave, not under running water.

* You can save up to 675 gallons of water per month if you turn off the faucet while you are brushing your teeth or shaving.

Consider water-efficient clothes and dish washers when it's time to replace your current appliances. A water-efficient washing machine uses an average of 27 gallons of water per load. Older and non-water-efficient washing machines can use as much as 43 gallons of water per load. A water-efficient dish washer uses seven gallons per load compared to older non-water-efficient models that use up to 12 gallons per load.
