"A River Runs Through" Free Community Fair at Hillsborough River State Park

Environmental enthusiasts of all ages are invited to come out and enjoy a free community fair being held at the Hillsborough River State Park, May 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 9th Annual “A River Runs Through It” community fair features watershed education workshops, watershed educational bingo, children’s activities and educational displays. Visitors can also canoe, fish or take a nature hike.

The workshops include the award-winning Frog Listening Network, rain barrel construction, introduction to bird watching, sensible lawn sprinkling, basic wilderness survival skills, the history of the state park and its ecology, how to handle nuisance wildlife, and the magnificence of canoeing on the Hillsborough River. Workshops are by registration only.

Everyone who plays watershed education bingo will receive a prize. The grand prize winner, who knows the most about the watershed, will receive a weekend for two at the Hillsborough River State Park complete with free canoe rental and a pancake breakfast.

Educational displays feature Florida-friendly landscaping practices, recycling automobile fluids, picking up pet waste, not dumping into stormwater drains and conserving water.

The “River Runs Through It” community fair is being funded in part by a $4,131 Community Education Grant the Hillsborough River Greenways Task Force received from the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Hillsborough River Basin Board.
