Restrooms at Green Thumb Festival Teach About Water Conservation

News Release

Homeowners and gardeners looking to perk up their yard can learn a lot about landscaping at the Green Thumb Festival in St. Petersburg. In fact, they can even pick up Florida-friendly landscaping tips when they use the restroom!

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is bringing its water conservation restrooms to the festival being held April 29-30. Community festivals allow the District to spread the word about water conservation to a variety of audiences.

In addition to providing an interactive opportunity for visitors to experience water conservation in action, the trailer also features the District’s Florida-Friendly Yards “Grow Smart” campaign through water conservation displays and materials.

“The Green Thumb Festival is an ideal place to talk about Florida-friendly landscaping, which conserves water and protects the environment,” said Sylvia Durell, senior communications coordinator. “Attendees are interested in learning about better ways to garden. They can take home the information they receive and put it right into practice.”

The Green Thumb Festival features environmental and horticultural exhibits, a tree and plant sale, the Garden Club of St. Petersburg Flower Show, a grow and share program, a diagnostic clinic, free mulch, 500 free butterfly plants per day, a tool sharpening booth, entertainment and children’s programs.

This is the fourth year the water conservation restroom trailers have been featured at community events. Funding for the restroom trailer comes from the District’s Hillsborough River, Manasota, Pinellas-Anclote River and Withlacoochee River basin boards.
