A cooperative project between the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Pinellas County and the City of Dunedin will reduce flooding and improve water quality entering St. Joseph Sound.
The project involves conducting a survey and the design, permitting and construction of a box culvert to connect Curlew Creek Channel A to an existing detention pond owned by the county. Curlew Creek, which is located in the Spanish Oaks Diversion improvement area, flows into St. Joseph Sound.
This project will provide flood protection by reducing the peak flood elevation by 0.3 feet and improve water quality by reducing the erosion of the creek bottom and banks.
This project is part of the Curlew Creek Watershed Management Plan, which was funded by the District, the City of Dunedin and Pinellas County. The watershed covers approximately 8.9 square miles and is located within Dunedin.
This $1.9 million, multi-year project is being funded among the District’s Pinellas-Anclote River Basin Board, the city and the county. The District is funding up to $850,000 and the county and the city will share the remaining costs.
The permitting and construction documents are complete. Construction is expected to begin later this fall and should be complete within three or four months.
