A project funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the City of Clearwater will bring reclaimed water to approximately 500 residents who live in the Chautauqua and Coachman Ridge areas of the city.
The project includes the design and construction of more than 59,000 linear feet of reclaimed water transmission lines and distribution piping.
The Chautauqua portion of the project will take place south of Enterprise Road, north of Lake Chautauqua, west of McMullen Booth Road and east of Foxhead Way. The Coachman Ridge portion of the project is located south of Sunset Road, north of N.E. Coachman Road (State Road 590), west of Highway 19 and east of Belcher Road.
This project is expected to provide approximately 270,000 gallons per day (gpd) of reclaimed water to nearly 500 residential and commercial reclaimed water customers in central Clearwater. The project will offset 140,000 gpd of ground water.
This cooperatively funded effort between the District’s Pinellas-Anclote River Basin Board and Clearwater is estimated to cost $3,954,000. The District will contribute 50 percent of the costs.
Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2008 and is expected to be complete by December 2011.
Reclaimed water is wastewater that has received at least secondary treatment and is used for a beneficial purpose, such as irrigation. By offsetting demand for ground water and surface water, this alternative, non-traditional water source reduces stress on environmental systems, provides economic benefits by delaying costly water system expansions, and eliminates the need to discharge wastewater effluent to surface waters.
