Media Alert: Local students complete butterfly garden at nursing center

Who: Moore-Mickens Education Center teachers and students, Royal Oaks Nursing Center residents and staff, Southwest Florida Water Management District Youth Education staff

What: A grand opening is being held to celebrate the completion of a butterfly, herb and vegetable garden at the nursing center.

When: Thursday, April 16, 9:30 a.m.

Where: Royal Oaks Nursing Center, 37300 Royal Oak Lane, Dade City

Why: The students planted a butterfly, herb and vegetable garden for residents of the nursing and rehabilitation center using low- maintenance, drought tolerant Florida-friendly landscaping principles.

Teachers and students completed the project with funding from the District’s Splash! mini-grant program, which offers up to $5,000 per school. The program offers students the opportunity to learn more about water resources through experiential learning projects. This grant program supports the District’s overriding goal of advancing superior stewardship of Florida’s precious water resources.
