Media Alert: Local students celebrate completion of outdoor classroom garden

News Release

Who: Willis Peters Exceptional Center teachers and students

What: A grand opening to celebrate the completion of an outdoor classroom garden, which features a butterfly garden as well as a hydroponic container garden.

When: Friday, April 24, 11 a.m.

Where: Willis Peters Exceptional Center, 3035 Nelson Ave., Dover

Why: The students spent eight months learning about water conservation and hydroponic container gardening. The garden enables all students with disabilities a unique hands-on learning environment.

This project is aiding the school with implementing the new Sunshine State Standard in Science for students with disabilities. The teachers believe the hands-on opportunity will help their students increase their science scores.

Teachers and students completed the project with funding from the District’s Splash! mini-grant program, which offers up to $5,000 per school. The program offers students the opportunity to learn more about water resources through experiential learning projects. This grant program supports the District’s overriding goal of advancing superior stewardship of Florida’s precious water resources.
