Media Alert: District volunteers to join Scubanauts and Boy Scouts during Chassahowitzka River cleanup

Who: The Tarpon Springs chapter of Scubanauts International and their adult supervisors, Citrus County Parks and Recreation Department, volunteers from the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Boy Scout Troop 302 from Inverness

What: District staff will volunteer with the Tarpon Springs Scubanauts during an underwater cleanup of the Chassahowitzka River

When:Sunday, May 31, 9 a.m.

Where:The youth dive group, lead by adult supervisors, will remove trash and light debris from the spring vent. They will also pick up bottles, cans, plastic bags, fishing line and other trash along a half-mile of river bottom. They will meet at the Chassahowitzka River Campground and Boat Ramp, located at 8600 West Miss Maggie Drive in Homosassa.

Additional Information: A local Boy Scout troop will clean the river and shoreline by canoe. All trash will be sorted, recorded and taken to the county landfill. Between all of the groups, approximately 40 to 45 volunteers are expected to participate in the cleanup.

Multiple dive flags will be used to mark the location of the snorkelers and divers during the cleanup and two large jon boats will be stationed near the divers and snorkelers at all times. Boaters in the area are asked to navigate with caution in the upper reach of the Chassahowitzka River.
