Landscaping Pros Invited to Compete in Springs Awareness Week Landscape Challenge

News Release

h2. Winner Will Earn "Ruling Water Champion" Crown

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ is inviting area landscaping professionals to compete for the title of "Ruling Water Champion" at the District's third Landscape Challenge competition, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at "Armstrong Homes":http://www.armstronghomes.net/, 7821 N. Florida Avenue in Citrus Springs.

The Springs Awareness Week Landscape Challenge will provide hands-on instruction in a competitive format. Teams of landscape maintenance professionals from companies and government facilities departments in Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Pasco and Sumter counties will compete by demonstrating proper fertilization practices that protect our local springs and other water resources.

Sometimes Florida yards need fertilizer to help keep them healthy, but applying too much fertilizer, too often or at the wrong time can cause water pollution. This event gives landscaping professionals the chance to demonstrate their real-world application of Florida-friendly fertilizing techniques.

Teams will compete in four challenges, which are based on Florida-friendly fertilizing and micro-irrigation principles:

* Sizing It Up – teams will demonstrate knowledge of how much fertilizer to apply to a 1,000 sq. ft. yard and how to calibrate a spreader.
* Right plant, right place – teams will recommend plants and turf based on results of a soil test.
* Aim on Fertilizer – teams will answer questions about fertilization methods.
* Water It Right – teams will work together to demonstrate irrigation system design that conserves water, using low-flow irrigation.

To register a team for the competition, contact the "Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association(FNGLA)":http://www.fngla.org (FNGLA) at 1-800-375-3642 or mmott@fngla.org by Sept. 16. Landscape Challenge is free and continuing education credits are available to FNGLA Certified Industry Professionals.
