Highlands County pilot project to increase efficiency of Sebring irrigation systems

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District's(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us "Peace River Basin Board(Peace River Basin Board)":/about/basinboards/peace.php has partnered with the "Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District(Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District)":http://www.highlandsswcd.org/ to help homeowners improve the efficiency of their irrigation systems.

The pilot project involves bringing a "mobile irrigation lab(Mobile Irrigation Lab)":/agriculture/mobile.html to 35 homeowners residing in the city of Sebring. The lab will evaluate residential irrigation systems and develop customized recommendations on irrigation equipment, management practices, "Florida-Friendly Landscaping™(Florida-Friendly Landscaping)":/yards and irrigation schedules. In addition, all irrigation systems that do not have an automatic shut-off device will be provided with the device and installation.

Homeowners living within the City of Sebring who responded to a solicitation from the Homeowners Association of Highlands County were selected to participate in the program. Participation by these homeowners is voluntary and free of charge.

Master gardeners from the "Highlands County Extension office(Highlands County Extension office)":http://highlands.ifas.ufl.edu/index.shtml and Earth Team volunteers from the "Natural Resources Conservation Service(Natural Resources Conservation Service)":http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/ are working alongside U.S. Environmental Protection Agency "WaterSense(WaterSense)":http://www.epa.gov/watersense/ -certified irrigation system auditors to evaluate the irrigation systems.

The total water savings from the program is estimated to be 8,400 gallons per day. The $10,850 program is being funded by the Peace River Basin Board and the Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District.
