Governing Board proposes lower millage rate

News Release

At its Aug. 24 meeting in Wauchula, the "Southwest Florida Water Management District's Governing Board(Governing Board)":/about/governingboard reduced the proposed fiscal year 2011 (FY2011) millage rate to 0.3770 mill for the "District's(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ General Fund, which is 0.0096 mill less than the current fiscal year's rate of 0.3866, reducing ad valorem tax revenue an additional $2.65 million from FY 2010.

The reduction is a change from the July 29 meeting, when Board members voted to keep the FY2011 millage unchanged from FY2010. This lowered millage rate, combined with a reduction in property values as certified by county property appraisers, will result in a $15.5 million decrease in ad valorem property tax revenue from FY2010.

The last time the Governing Board lowered the District's millage rate was FY2008, when the Board reduced the millage rate by 0.0354 from 0.422. Before the FY 2008 reduction, the millage rate held steady at 0.422 from FY1994 through FY2007.

Two statutorily required public TRIM hearings on the District's total budget will be held in September. The first will be Sept. 14 at 5:01 p.m. at the District's Tampa Service Office.

The Governor's office will review and approve the budgets of all five water management districts before the second and final public hearing.

The District's second and final TRIM hearing will be Sept. 28 at 5:01 p.m. at the District's Brooksville Headquarters. At the conclusion of the hearing, the Governing Board will formally adopt the final millage rates and budgets. The public is welcome to attend any "Governing Board or Basin Board meeting (Boards, Meetings & Events Calendar)":/calendar/calendar.php to provide comment on the proposed budgets.
