Florida-Friendly Workshop Coming Soon to Citrus County

News Release

Spring is the time when many people start thinking about gardening. This spring, Citrus County residents have the opportunity to learn about Florida-friendly landscaping and water-conserving irrigation practices. A “Florida-Friendly Landscaping 101” workshop will be conducted in Lecanto at the Citrus County Canning Center on April 30, 8 a.m to 2 p.m. The workshop will focus on these topics:
Right plant, right place
Efficient irrigation and water use
Fertilizing the Florida-Friendly way
Turf types and management
Bluebirds and bluebird nest boxes
Composting and compost barrels
Rain harvesting and rain barrels

Workshop sessions will be taught by Citrus County Extension Service staff and other landscape professionals. Continental breakfast, door prizes and informational booths will also be part of the program. At the end of the day, Florida-Friendly Landscaping 101 “graduates” receive a certificate and informational materials.

Pre-registration is required. The $15 registration fee for this program includes materials, lunch and refreshments. Three optional “make and take” sessions will be offered at an additional charge from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. These sessions will allow participants to make and take home their own bluebird box, compost barrel or rain barrel. To register or to receive an invitation with the day’s agenda call Rivard Redding or Debbe Hooper at the Citrus County Extension Service Office at 352-726-2141. The registration deadline is Friday, April 15.

The workshop is sponsored by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Citrus County Extension Service, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program and Mister Landscaper, Inc.
