District Will Begin Testing Siren in Lake Placid

News Release

h2. First Test This Saturday, July 2 at 12:30 p.m.

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ will begin monthly audible testing on Saturday, July 2, of an emergency siren located at a water control structure on Jack Creek in Lake Placid.

The audible testing will occur the first Saturday of each month at 12:30 p.m. to ensure the siren performs properly. During testing, the siren will sound once for approximately 15 seconds and is expected to reach a two-mile radius.

The siren was installed as an additional safety procedure for the unlikely event of an emergency that could result in the failure of the water control structure. The structure, located on Jack Creek at 1152 Peachtree Drive, regulates water levels in Lake June-in-Winter to ensure environmental health, recreational use and aesthetic value of the lake. The District currently owns and operates the structure, which is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure it is safe and functioning properly.

In the event of a real emergency, the siren would be activated with alternating intervals of three minutes of sound followed by three minutes of silence to alert residents living along Jack and Josephine creeks to evacuate and seek higher ground. This would continue until the conclusion of the emergency situation or until all residents downstream of the structure have been safely evacuated.

In preparation of the first test, the District recently mailed letters to more than 4,000 residents and scheduled a public meeting to answer questions about the siren. The public meeting is Thursday, June 30, at the H.L. Bishop Clubhouse at 10 Lake June Clubhouse Road in Lake Placid. The meeting will be held in an open house format and members of the public can arrive any time between 4 and 6:30 p.m.
