District signs agreement for plan that could conserve groundwater

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District and Winter Haven recently signed an agreement to begin a master plan that will identify ways to use reclaimed water and conserve the groundwater supply.

“The master plan will ultimately recommend how the City of Winter Haven should focus its efforts to best accomplish its goals and use its reclaimed water reuse resources from its two wastewater treatment plants,” said Tammy Antoine, District staff water conservation analyst. “Upon completion of this project, the city will have the necessary information for implementing a public access reclaimed water reuse service to customers in the region.”

The plan will explore upgrading one wastewater facility, so both facilities will meet public-access reuse standards. It also will research interconnecting reuse lines between the city’s two wastewater treatment plants. Both options would supply reclaimed water to more customers for commonly irrigated areas such as golf courses, cemeteries, residential developments and numerous parks.

In evaluating the current system, the plan also will identify the costs to construct a more efficient reuse water supply, potential customers and quantities needed.

The estimated total cost of this plan is $100,000. This project is being cooperatively funded by the District’s Peace River Basin Board and Winter Haven.

The master plan has an anticipated completion date of April 2007.
