District Renews and Modifies City of Inverness Water Use Permit

News Release

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District's(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ "Governing Board(Governing Board)":/about/governingboard Tuesday renewed and modified a water use permit (WUP) for the City of Inverness.

The modified permit reduces the permitted quantities for the city. The previous annual average permitted quantity was 1.7 million gallons of water per day (mgd). The new permitted quantity is 1.5 mgd.

Population projections are predicted to increase from 8,185 to 10,084 people, however the per capita rate will decrease from 211 gallons per person per day in the previous permit to 150 gallons per person per day during the term of this permit. In 2008 the Board voted to require all water utilities in the District's northern counties to achieve a per capita of 150 gallons or less per person per day by 2019. Previously, the District had only required water utilities in designated Water Use Caution Areas (WUCAs) to meet or be under the 150 daily per capita limit.

An increase in available reclaimed water was also considered in evaluating the permit. Approximately 413,000 gallons per day of reclaimed water is currently being used. A total of 771,000 gallons per day is projected to be available by 2020.

The permit requires the city to report metering and pumpage data from its large diameter production wells and report water-quality sampling results from one of the wells.

The City of Inverness permit expires Jan. 25, 2021.
