District Partners With USF Organizations to Bring a Water Conservation Program to USF Students

News Release

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ is kicking off a water conservation campaign called "Every Drop Counts!(/Every Drop Counts!)":/EveryDropCounts on USF's Tampa campus.

District officials estimate that the average person in this region uses 111 gallons of water per day. The program offers ideas for college students to reduce their use in every day activities.

The District says they are not asking people to go without. They want students to take a look at their current water use practices and think about where they can make some adjustments and use only what they need.

"It is important to make sure that every drop that we take out of the public supply is being used responsibly and not wasted. That is why our campaign message is Every Drop Counts!" says Dorian Morgan, a USF graduate who is coordinating the program for the District.

Morgan is working with "USF's Office of Sustainability":http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Sustainability and a student group, "Engineers for a Sustainable World":http://www.esustainableworld.org/ (ESWUSF), on the campaign.

Numerous events are planned for the spring semester, including the distribution of program posters and decals that will be posted throughout the campus, a 111-gallon water jug sculpture representing the average amount of water used each day per person in this region and a 30-second water conservation video competition where students can tell why they think Every Drop Counts. The winner of the video competition will receive $250 and a two-day production assistant intern package on the District's next media project, including one day on set and one day in editing. More information, rules and video submission information can be found at "WaterMatters.org/EveryDropCounts/":/EveryDropCounts.
