District honors Edward W. Chance

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board on July 31 passed a resolution honoring the late Edward W. Chance for his outstanding service as a member of the District Governing Board.

The resolution recognized Chance for his exceptional skills in coalition-building, environmental leadership, foresight, wisdom and administrative abilities that were instrumental in ensuring responsible stewardship of water resources and related natural systems.

In appreciation of Chance’s dedication to public service, the resolution noted that Chance “at all times carried out the District’s responsibilities in an outstanding manner and with a spirit of friendliness and cooperation toward local city and county governments, other public and private entities, consultants and the public.”

Governing Board members are volunteers appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate. Chance was appointed to the Board in September 2000 and reappointed in 2001 and 2005. The Board unanimously elected him honorary chair in May 2004.

Chance was a member of the District Governing Board’s Resource Management and Development Committee, and a member of the Outreach and Planning Committee. He was the co-chair ex officio of the Manasota Basin Board from September 2000 through June 2006.

An 11-member Governing Board establishes policies for the entire 16-county District. The Governing Board represents a wide cross section of interests, including agricultural, recreational, business, industrial, urban, rural and the public. They serve four-year terms. Each member also serves as the ex officio chair of a Basin Board. The Governing Board also appoints the District’s executive director, who directs all District activities.
