District to Hold Public Workshop on Revised Minimum Flows for Chassahowitzka and Homosassa River Systems

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is inviting the public to comment on revised "minimum flows for the Chassahowitzka and Homosassa river systems":http://www.WaterMatters.org/SpringsCoastMFL/ at a public workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The workshop will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lecanto Government Building, 3600 W. Sovereign Path, Room 166, Lecanto.

The state Legislature requires the District to set minimum flows and levels (MFLs) for priority water bodies within the District. A minimum flow or level is the limit at which further water withdrawals will cause significant harm to the water resources and/or environment.

The District developed proposed minimum flows for the Chassahowitzka and Homosassa river systems in 2010. The District held a series of public meetings and workshops to gather input and conducted additional analyses based on those comments. The workshop will provide staff the opportunity to present the revised minimum flow recommendations, summarizing the feedback received during the extensive public comment period and how it resulted in the revised minimum flow recommendations.

Information obtained at the workshop will be summarized and made available to the District's Governing Board. District staff anticipates presenting the proposed flows for Chassahowitzka and Homosassa river systems at the Oct. 30 Governing Board meeting, where the Governing Board may choose to recommend adoption of the minimum flows into District rules. Governing Board meetings are open to the public and brief oral comments are permitted on meeting agenda items.

Written comments on the minimum flows for Chassahowitzka and Homosassa river systems can be submitted at "WaterMatters.org/SpringsCoastMFL":http://www.WaterMatters.org/SpringsCoastMFL/ until Oct. 17. After this date, comments may be submitted via email at executive@watermatters.org or by mail to ATTN: Governing Board, 2379 Broad Street, Brooksville, Florida, 34604-6899.
