District to address flooding in Town of Inglis

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Town of Inglis will soon begin implementing projects to improve water quality and reduce flooding in Cason Acres and surrounding areas.

The 19-acre watershed, located in southern Levy County, has a history of
widespread flooding in the areas between Vicki, Sapp, Daisy and Lori streets. A watershed is an area of land that water flows across as it moves toward a common body of water. This watershed discharges to the Withlacoochee River.

The District completed a watershed management plan that identified areas that contribute to flooding and water quality issues in the watershed.

The plan proposes constructing a 13-acre treatment facility east of Route 19 with a series of ditches and culverts to transport stormwater runoff to the facility and back to the river. The plan also recommends the use of the existing culverts and conveyance system to direct water from the eastern portion of the drainage area to a proposed 2-acre treatment facility that is located south of CR-40.

The projects will be constructed in phases to facilitate funding of this multi-year project. This phase will include the design of the entire project, permitting of the proposed improvements and construction of some of the projects for the Cason Acres area.

The overall cost of the project is $2.8 million. The cost for this portion of the project is $800,000 and will be funded by the District’s Withlacoochee River Basin Board and the Town of Inglis. The Town will manage the project.
