Celebrate Water Conservation Month with Indoor Tips

News Release

Did you know a family of four could save up to 30,000 gallons of water a year just by fixing leaks and replacing old plumbing fixtures with water conserving fixtures?

This is just one of the water conservation tips offered by the Southwest Florida Water Management District this April, which has been designated as Water Conservation Month.

The average resident living within our 16-county District uses 124 gallons of water each day and if you haven’t thought about conserving water, now is a great time to start! You can reduce your indoor water consumption by taking a few simple steps.

Inside Tips

Detect and stop leaks. A leak of one drop per second wastes 2,400 gallons of water per year.

Stop excess flushing. Do not use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.

Operate the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have a full load.

Scrape, don’t rinse dishes when loading into the dishwasher.

Thaw food in the refrigerator or microwave, not under running water.

Capture running water while you wait for it to get hot and use it to water plants in the yard or around the house.

Incorporating these simple steps will not only save water, it may save you money on your water bill. For more information about how you can conserve water, please visit the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s web site at www.WaterMatters.org.
