Celebrate Water Conservation Month

Did you know that each person in our region uses an average of 72 gallons of water each day? That’s a lot of water down the drain!

April is Water Conservation Month, a perfect time for homeowners to reflect on their water use. Here are some simple yet effective ways to save water both inside and outside your home.

Leaks inside your toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. Conduct a simple toilet leak detection test to avoid paying for wasted water. You can also seek the leak indoors by using your water meter. Common culprits of indoor leaks include showerheads, sink faucets and water supply line connections.

Saving water inside and out can be rewarding. Look for the WaterSense® or ENERGY STAR® label when shopping for new fixtures and appliances to achieve automatic savings! Check with your local water utility for funding opportunities that can help you make water-efficient upgrades, such as high-efficiency toilet rebate programs

Conserving water outdoors can also equal big savings. Running an in-ground irrigation system just one time can use the same amount of water as an eight-hour shower! Be in the know on watering basics for Florida landscapes to jump start your savings. Using a rain barrel to collect rainwater also supplements irrigation and saves money over time.

A small leak outdoors can waste 300 or more gallons of water per month. Look for leaks in automatic lawn and sprinkling systems, swimming pools and service connecting lines.

Discover your daily water consumption by using the water use calculator

By following your city or county water regulations, you’re playing a key role in conserving our water resources.

Water conservation is a year-round effort, but Water Conservation Month is a great reminder of how small changes in our daily routines can add up to make a significant impact.
