Students Square off in Envirothon

They tackled topics that ranged from soils and forestry to aquatics and wildlife.

More than 300 students from four counties recently participated in the 2014 Nature Coast Envirothon at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

The competition is a problem-solving, natural resources education program for high school students allowing them to use critical-thinking skills to solve problems or conduct hands-on investigations about current environmental issues.

Envirothon

This is the 17th year the District’s Brooksville Regulation staff helped conduct the competition by developing questions for the special topic. This year’s special topic was sustainable agriculture/locally grown. The questions focused on how to conserve water, energy and natural resources and better environmental practices that may be used by farmers. Kim Dymond, Frank Gargano, Josh Madden and Carolyn Pina represented the District.

Sixty-one teams of students from Pasco, Hernando, Citrus and Sumter counties answered the science questions.

The “Dinosaur Eggs” team from Central High in Hernando County took the top spot. The team won $2,500 and is now eligible to compete in the state competition in May.
