Public Invited to Informational Meeting on Chassahowitzka Spring Restoration Dredging

News Release

The "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/
is inviting the public to an informational meeting on the Chassahowitzka Headsprings Restoration Dredging project. The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011 at Citrus County's Lecanto Government Building, 3600 W. Sovereign Path in Lecanto.

The District is preparing to conduct a restoration dredging project on the Chassahowitzka Headsprings. The project is expected to begin as early as July 15, but the start date will depend on the issuing of federal permits to protect manatees during construction. Construction is expected to take three to four months and result in improved water quality and habitat in the springs.

The restoration project is needed to address the accumulation of sand, silt, muck and litter in the headsprings, and excessive growth of nuisance algae taking the place of desirable native plants. The project will involve removing approximately 3,000 cubic yards of material from the headspring. Sediments will be transported by suction dredge to a section of the parking area and the material will be pumped into porous containment bags to drain the water from the sediment.

While there will be a reduction in the number of available parking spaces at the Chassahowitzka River Campground during construction, the boat ramp will remain open. Additional parking will be provided in the campground.

Most of the funding for the $1.3 million project was provided by the District's Coastal Rivers Basin Board, with Citrus County contributing $25,000 during the initial design phase.
