Outdoor opportunities for the disabled

As part of a partnership between the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF)/Wheelin’ Sportsmen, seven events for disabled outdoor enthusiasts are planned each year. Here is a look at the outdoor opportunities planned on District-owned land this year.

*Modern Gun Hunt Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, Polk Nov. 17-19

*Muzzle Loader Hunt Upper Hillsborough, Alston Tract, Pasco Dec. 1-3

*Cross Bow Hunt Starkey Wilderness Preserve, Pasco Jan. 12-14

*Hog Still Hunt Upper Hillsborough, Alston Tract, Pasco Feb. 2-4

*Quail Hunt Lake Manatee Preserve, Gilley Creek, Manatee Feb. 10-11

*Spring Turkey Hunt Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, Polk March 23-25

*Fishing Event Edward Medard Park and Reservoir, Hillsborough May 12

Those who participate in Wheelin’ Sportsmen events are pre-selected through an application process. For more information about participating in these events, visit the National Wild Turkey Federation web site at www.nwtf.org.

The Wheelin’ Sportsmen is dedicated to providing all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. The group organizes hunting and fishing events, recreational shooting and other outdoor activities. More than 20 events are held throughout Florida each year.
