MOSI's Butterfly Weekend is Free and Fun

News Release

Butterfly lovers will have a weekend to explore the Museum of Science and Industry’s (MOSI) Bio Work’s Butterfly Garden at no charge.

Butterfly Weekend at MOSI is being held Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday Sept. 25. The Bio Works Butterfly Garden will be open to the public, free of charge, on both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Besides exploring the Bio Works Butterfly Garden, attendees will also be able to participate in several hands-on activities on Saturday, Sept. 24. Activities include a butterfly gardening class, butterfly story time for kids and a children’s butterfly class and activities.

Butterfly Weekend is the result of a partnership between MOSI and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The museum received a $5,000 Community Education Grant from the District’s Alafia River, Hillsborough River and Northwest Hillsborough Basin Boards for the exhibit, which is a model of an engineered wetland that has been teaching MOSI guests since 1996. More than 800,000 people visit the museum each year. Signage in the Bio Works Butterfly Garden focuses on native landscaping, water conservation and how to attract butterflies.

Bank of America and the Jacarlene Foundation, Inc. are also partners on this project.

The District is currently accepting applications for the 2006 Community Education Grant Program. To learn more about the program or to apply, please visit www.WaterMatters.org or call 1-800-423-1476, ext. 4779.
