Minimum Flows and Levels Explained at Workshop

News Release

Local elected officials, community leaders, regional water supply authority board members, and other interested people are invited to attend a workshop in Hernando County aimed at explaining minimum flows and levels (MFLs.)

The workshop, which is being hosted by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Hernando County Utilities Department and the Hernando County Groundwater Guardian Team, will be held Wednesday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hernando County Utilities Department, 21030 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville.

District Governing and Basin Board members will also attend this joint educational workshop, which is being organized to foster a more complete understanding of how MFLs are set, what agencies are responsible and what impacts may be expected.

An MFL is the limit at which further water withdrawals will cause significant harm to the water resources and/or environment. The Legislature has mandated that the District set MFLs for lakes, rivers, streams and all first-magnitude springs in the District. The District’s Governing Board sets these limits as part of achieving the delicate balance between meeting human water needs and those of Florida’s natural systems.

To attend the workshop, please reserve a spot by April 21 by contacting Lou Kavouras, District deputy executive director, at 1-800-423-1476, ext. 4606 or Lou.Kavouras@watermatters.org or Alys Brockway, Hernando County water conservation coordinator, at (352) 540-4368, ext. 35139 or abrockway@co.hernando.fl.us.
