On Friday, February 12, the "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":http://watermatters.org will certify the first home in Hernando County to meet the criteria of the "Florida Water StarSM Gold(Florida Water Star Gold)":http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/conservation/florida_water_star_gold program.
The District has partnered with Diamond Construction to certify the home in Hernando County's Riverdale neighborhood as part of the Florida Water Star Gold program. This voluntary certification program for builders encourages water efficiency in household appliances, plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and landscapes.
Ron Oakley, vice chair of the District's Governing Board, will present the certification plaque to Brian Blankenship of Diamond Construction. Following the certification, the owners, Judy Yates and Mike Lyles, and the builder will a hold question and answer session on environmentally sound building and landscaping techniques. The home will then be available for tours by the media and members of the public.
The home features plumbing fixtures that meet the Environmental Protection Agency's "WaterSense(WaterSense - an EPA Partnership Program)":http://www.epa.gov/watersense criteria, such as high-efficiency toilets and water-saving faucets and shower heads.
Because the house is located on the Withlacoochee River, water quality protection was also an important consideration. Special care was taken during construction to ensure there would be no damage to the river. The landscaping is designed as a preserve setting, with natural plants dominating the site.
"We are pleased to have a custom home builder on board that is excited to build environmentally-friendly housing in areas where there are more environmental challenges," said Susan Douglas, Florida Water Star Gold certification coordinator. "Diamond Construction was able to meet the challenge."
