Media Alert: Sumter Students Learn About Environmental Sciences at the District's Lake Panasoffkee Property

Students and staff from South Sumter High School, Wildwood Middle High School and field experts from the "Southwest Florida Water Management District(Southwest Florida Water Management District)":/ .

|*What:*|Sumter County School District personnel and District field experts will engage 45 ninth-grade students in activities that integrate the use of technology tools with the collection and recording of data about the site. The highlights include conducting water quality studies and tracking endangered species.

The District is making the "Lake Panasoffkee(Lake Panasoffkee property)":/recreation/areas/lakepanasoffkee.html property available to students as part of the award-winning ""Get Outside!"(Get outside and explore your conservation lands)":/ recreation campaign.

With funding from a state Enhancing Education through Technology grant, the school district has been able to purchase wireless portable computers, digital cameras, scientific probes, and GPS devices. The focus of the grant is to enhance science teaching and learning through the integration of technology. By combining science content, use of technology, environmental awareness and hands-on field experiences, students will gain a valuable learning opportunity.
