The Southwest Florida Management District and Polk County invite the public to attend an informational meeting to discuss the Christina watershed management plan, which will address flooding and water quality issues within the watershed.
The public meeting will be held July 15, 6 p.m. at the District’s Bartow Service Office, which is located off State Road 60 at 170 Century Boulevard.
The watershed is located in and north of Mulberry in western Polk County within the District’s Alafia River Basin and is part of the headwaters to the North Prong of the Alafia River. The watershed boundaries are roughly south of County Road 540A, east of State Road 37 (Florida Avenue), west of Lakeland Highlands Road, and north of State Road 60.
The area has experienced recurrent flooding for the past 10 years and is also experiencing rapid growth.
The District and county evaluated the watershed and are currently developing a watershed management plan to identify and prioritize water resources issues and recommend alternatives to improve flood protection and water quality.
During the meeting, staff will review the watershed management plan and present the watershed modeling results as well as recommended improvements. Maps and aerial photographs of the watershed will be used to illustrate the study limits, areas of known flooding and drainage concerns, and descriptions of proposed projects that will address flooding and water quality issues.
Residents who attend the meeting will be given an opportunity to ask questions and make comments about the recommendations.
