Kings Bay residents will Know Where It Flows

News Release

Beginning next week, residents around Kings Bay will receive a special mail delivery that will show them just how easy it is to keep their bay beautiful.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is providing information about proper fertilizing techniques and septic tank maintenance to Kings Bay residents as part of its “Know Where It Flows” educational campaign.

Nutrients from fertilizers and septic tanks can seep into the ground, which discharge into and pollute the springs and spring-fed rivers.

Launched in October 2005, the comprehensive education program is designed to engage the community in actions that will help maintain and improve the water quality in Crystal River/Kings Bay and other Citrus County areas.

“The messages will remind residents that by simply using appropriate landscape and septic tank maintenance habits, they can help minimize pollution currently affecting the water quality in Kings Bay,” said Sylvia Durell, senior communications coordinator at the District. “They focus on helping people be more personally accountable for actions that threaten water quality in the area.”

The “Know Where It Flows” campaign was developed from recent research conducted by the District that surveyed people who live in the Kings Bay area. The research provided information about the community’s general knowledge of groundwater systems, current water quality practices and media preferences.

The District has contracted with Rivard Reding, former Citrus County Florida Yards & Neighborhoods program coordinator, to educate homeowners, plant nursery owners and managers, landscape professionals and students about additional ways to keep their water resources clean.
