Green Swamp Wilderness Park Reserved for Disabled Hunt

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Hampton Tract, which is part of the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, will be reserved Nov. 18-20 for an event that allows disabled hunters the opportunity to experience the outdoors. The property will be closed to the public during this time.

The Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve’s Polk County entrance is at the intersection of Rockridge Road and Deen Still Road.

The hunt is a joint effort between the District and the National Wild Turkey Federation/Wheelin’ Sportsmen. Approximately 25 hunters have already been selected for this event. They will use shotguns and rifles to hunt deer and hogs. For more information about participating in future events, visit the National Wild Turkey Federation web site www.nwtf.org.

An area equestrian and volunteer group, the Hampton River Riders, has volunteered to provide a meal for the hunters during this event. The Hampton River Riders assist the District in maintaining the Green Swamp Preserve. Last year the group received special recognition by the District for contributing more than 500 hours of service.

This hunt is one of more than 20 events the National Wild Turkey Federation/ Wheelin’ Sportsmen holds throughout Florida each year.

This year the District and the National Wild Turkey Federation/Wheelin’ Sportsmen entered a five-year partnership that calls for several planned outdoors events to be held on District lands each year. The outings include different types of hunts and a fishing day.
