The Southwest Florida Water Management District will be treating infestations of hydrilla on the Rainbow River in Marion County Oct. 27-31. The section of the river to be treated is from upstream of KP Hole Park to where the Rainbow River meets the Withlacoochee River.
Treatment involves the application of the aquatic herbicide Aquathol Super K. Treatment areas will be posted with warning signs displaying treatment dates and applicable restrictions. Water from the treated section of the river should not be used for irrigation, domestic uses or agricultural sprays on food crops for seven days following treatment. These restrictions do not apply to tap or well water.
Hydrilla is a troublesome exotic aquatic plant, which escaped into Florida waters during the late 1950s. It is a fast-growing plant that expands quickly. If it is not controlled, recreational activities, navigation, flood control and fish and wildlife populations are negatively impacted. The management of hydrilla on the Rainbow River is a cooperative effort between the District, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
