District to Treat Hydrilla on Rainbow River

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District will be treating hydrilla in Marion County March 6-9. Infestations of hydrilla will be treated on the Rainbow River from the County Road 484 bridge to where the river meets the Withlacoochee River.

Treatment involves the application of the aquatic herbicide Aquathol Super K. Treatment areas will be posted with warning signs displaying treatment dates and applicable water use restrictions. River water should not be used for irrigation or domestic purposes for seven days following treatment. Fish caught within treated areas should not be used for food or feed within three days of treatment. These restrictions do not to apply to tap or well water.

Hydrilla is a troublesome exotic aquatic plant, which escaped into Florida waters during the late 1950s. It is a fast-growing plant that expands quickly. If it is not controlled, recreational activities, navigation, flood control and fish and wildlife populations are negatively impacted. The management of hydrilla on the Rainbow River is a cooperative effort between the District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
