District to Treat Aquatic Plants on the Rainbow River

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) will be treating water lettuce on the Rainbow River in Marion County during the period of Jan. 19-21.

District workers will apply the aquatic herbicide Tribune to treat small, scattered infestations of water lettuce throughout the river from the Rainbow Springs State Park to the Withlacoochee River.

Informational signs will be posted in the treated areas noting treatment dates and applicable water use restrictions.

There will be no restrictions on the use of the river for swimming, fishing or boating. Treated river water should not be used as potable water, to irrigate turf or ornamental plants or to water livestock for one day following treatment. Food crops should not be irrigated with treated water for five days following treatment. Water use restrictions do not apply to well or tap water.

The management of invasive aquatic plant species on the Rainbow River is a cooperative effort between the District, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
