District Seeks Public Input on Cypress Creek Preserve

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is inviting the public to participate in a workshop aimed at updating the management plan for the Cypress Creek Preserve property in Pasco County.

The workshop will be held at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center on U.S. 41 (5401 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard) on Thursday, September 29, at 6 p.m.

The Preserve property encompasses approximately 7,400 acres and protects an extensive area of floodplain along an 8-mile length of Cypress Creek. The public can take advantage of a wide variety of recreational uses on the property, including hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, in-line skating, fishing and camping.

The northern end of the property, together with adjoining lands owned by Tampa Bay Water, serves as the location of the Cypress Creek wellfield. The Preserve’s portion of the wellfield serves as the location of both the Cypress Creek Water Treatment Plant and the operations center for Tampa Bay Water. It also houses five of the wellfield’s 13 production wells.

The District will continue to manage the Preserve’s natural resources and recreational usage. Public usage of District-owned lands emphasizes recreational uses that are compatible with the natural resources of a site. Tampa Bay Water will continue to manage the Preserve’s water supply facilities.

For more information about the management plan or attending the workshop, please call Eugene Kelly in the District’s Land Resources Department at 1-800-423-1476, extension 4464.
