District Schedules Repairs to Water Conservation Structure in Polk County

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) has scheduled repairs to the culvert at the District's P-3 water conservation structure. The structure is located northwest of Auburndale near the northeast shore of Whistler Lake, off Kirkland Lake Drive. The structure's gate is manually operated to help maintain water levels on Lake Arietta.

Repair work is scheduled to begin the first week of April and will be completed before the rainy season, which typically begins June 1. During that time, the City of Auburndale must cap a water line running through this project.

The P-3 water conservation structure is a single-gate structure with a culvert that spans 42 inches wide and 70 feet long. During Hurricane Irma, the culvert began to show signs of rusting and started to collapse. District staff will begin the process of replacing the existing culvert with a new 42 inch aluminum culvert and also will build a temporary dam around the structure to dewater or "dry out" the work area during the repairs.

Once that work is completed, District staff will dig out the old culvert and remove it, install a new culvert and remove the temporary dam.

The District will actively monitor water levels in lakes Arietta and Whistler during construction. Updates to surrounding landowners will be provided as milestones of the project are completed.
