District to recognize water-conserving home in St. Petersburg

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District will recognize REAL Building's Darren Brinkley for earning a Florida Water Star GoldSM (FWSG) certification on a home in northeast St. Petersburg where he and his family now live.

Susan Douglas, FWSG program coordinator, will present a plaque to Brinkley on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. at the home.

FWSG is a voluntary certification program for builders. It encourages water efficiency in household appliances, plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and landscapes, as well as water quality benefits from best management practices in landscapes.

Some of the features that make the house a FWSG-certified home include water-conserving faucets and showerheads, high-efficiency toilets, ENERGY STAR® appliances and an on-demand recirculating indoor water pump. In addition, 30 percent or more of the landscape is preserved non-invasive trees, shrubs and ground covers. The landscape beds also do not have a permanent irrigation system. However, water is collected in a cistern to be used for irrigation.

"This is the first FWSG-certified home to include a cistern," said Douglas. "It just goes to show you that simple systems from Florida's past can also be part of our future."

This is the second FWSG-certified home in Pinellas County. In addition to certifying individual homes, the District also works with developers to certify communities.
