District powers Pasco High School Future Farmers of America project

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board approved a plan that will provide electricity to the District’s Green Swamp West property.

Last May, the District signed a no-cost lease agreement which allows the Pasco High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) to use a 100-acre bahia pasture on the property for a cattle project. The FFA project area is located near the River Road entrance of the property.

The cattle grazing lease allows FFA students to learn about animal science and animal mechanics in an outdoor setting. The FFA is responsible for the general upkeep for the lease area, which includes maintaining the pastures and fencing.

Electricity is needed at the site to power a well that provides water for the cattle. The power line will also service a District campground.

The District has partnered with the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative to install an electric pump which will require a new electric power line. Service will run from the existing pole located near the security residence at the Green Swamp West property to the new pole. Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative has agreed to donate the costs associated with the construction of the power line. The District will pay for the pump and electric service.
