District partners with local governments to "campaign" against the drought

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is joining with local governments to “campaign” against the drought.

In this grass roots campaign, local governments and utilities are partnering with the District to raise public awareness of the drought and promote water conservation by placing water conservation signs in their communities. The signs are the size and shape of political yard signs.

The participating governments and utilities are: Bartow, Bradenton, Charlotte County, Dunedin, Dunnellon, Gulfport, Highland Park, Hillsborough County, Lakeland, Lake Placid, Levy County, Manatee County, North Port, Palmetto, Pasco County, Punta Gorda, Polk County, Sarasota, Sarasota County, Seminole, Tampa, Tarpon Springs, Treasure Island, Wauchula, Winter Haven, Venice, Yankeetown, Zephyrhills, Zolfo Springs and the Englewood Water District.

The District’s rainfall deficit for the past two years is more than 23 inches. Forecasters are predicting a drier than normal winter and spring, which means this serious situation could worsen and may set new record low levels.

The District is asking residents to follow the one-day-per-week watering restrictions and conserve water both indoors and outdoors of their homes and businesses.
