District declares April Water Conservation Month

News Release

The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board Tuesday declared April “Water Conservation Month.”

By proclaiming April to be Water Conservation Month, the District joins the state Legislature, Tampa Bay Water and dozens of local governments in an effort to call attention to the need for water conservation.

The District is currently in the middle of a severe water shortage due to a lack of rainfall over the past year. With April falling within Florida’s dry season, now is the perfect time to focus on how all water users can conserve this valuable resource.

“The current water shortage has increased the public’s awareness about the need to conserve,” said David Moore, District executive director. “By declaring April Water Conservation Month, we hope to bring more attention to just how important it is for everyone to help save our precious resource.”

While District staff advocates water conservation year-round, an extra effort will be made to promote conservation throughout April. Staff will be participating in a variety of events focusing on environmental education, including Earth Day celebrations, and a hotel-industry workshop.

In addition to staff participation, the water conservation restroom trailer will be at the Venice Sharks Tooth Festival and the Green Thumb Festival in St. Petersburg. The trailer features air conditioning, six private half baths with water conservation features, running water, lights, mirrors and a bathroom attendant who will keep the stalls clean and stocked. It also features the District’s Florida-Friendly Yards “Grow Smart” campaign through water conservation displays and materials, including the District’s Florida-Friendly tip cards and recorded public service announcements.
