The Southwest Florida Water Management District is working with Charlotte County to develop a comprehensive watershed management plan for the Charlotte Harbor Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). The plan will determine flood elevation levels and flows, water quality, and level of service deficiencies, which means determining when roads or other facilities are flooded beyond the level of adequate service for the community.
The Charlotte Harbor CRA is located mid-county directly adjacent to the Charlotte Harbor Estuary. The Charlotte Harbor CRA includes one of the earliest settlement areas in Charlotte County. Some historians believe the settlement dates back to the 1500s.
The plan will be used to determine feasible drainage alternatives that may be constructed to enhance and restore water quality and natural systems, or for flood protection. The plan will also assist local governments with their land management responsibilities and further the goals outlined in the Charlotte Harbor Community Redevelopment Plan.
Developing the watershed management plan is expected to cost $500,000, with funding divided between the District and Charlotte County. The District’s funding comes from the Peace River Basin Board. Future funding, which will be contingent upon basin board approval, will be used to prevent flooding and restore water quality and natural systems.
