Classroom challenge - a water conservation pledge for kids

Water plays an important role in our lives. Because we live in a state surrounded by so much water, we often forget about the importance of conservation.

All of us can become better at saving water. Have your class pledge to save at least 10 gallons of water per day and we will send you a free conservation challenge kit!

Classrooms must apply individually. Due to limited supplies, each water conservation challenge kit will only include materials for one class (up to 30 students).

Taking the challenge is simple:

Ask students to describe in their own words what water conservation means to them and how they can save water.
Decide as a class which activities and changes they are willing to make and check the boxes next to the actions students pledge to implement.
As a class, develop an action project featuring ways your class promotes water conservation (see examples below). Be creative!
After reviewing the pledge and developing a conservation project with your class, click “Complete the challenge,” fill in class information and click “Send.” Please note: If you teach multiple classes, you must submit a separate entry for each class.
Print and hang the pledge where your class will see it every day. Stress how important it is to practice water-saving habits and to encourage family, friends and neighbors to do so as well.
Implement your project during water conservation month and mail us a copy or sample of the completed product by May 20.

I pledge to:

1. Proclaim April as Water Conservation Month during morning news broadcast
2. Order a classroom set of our conservation materials
3. Hold a school conservation festival
4. Make conservation posters to display
5. Explore a virtual watershed
6. Have students complete the “Daily Water Use at Home” survey and reflect on what they can do to “reduce their use”
7. Have students write an essay and draw a picture of how they think the world would look without a clean and sustainable water supply
8. Write poems about water conservation and share them
9. Perform a water-themed puppet show or play
10. Include a water-saving tip each day during the morning news broadcast
11. Construct a “water cycle in a bag” to demonstrate how the hydrologic cycle works
12. Organize an art contest
13. Take a field trip to a water body, identify plants and animals and discuss their dependency on water
14. Take a tour of your school to investigate water-saving opportunities
15. Create a water-saving tips bulletin board
16. Have students write and present public service announcements about the importance of conservation
17. Contact your county Extension office for more information on designing and constructing rain barrels
18. Look at examples of past projects for ideas
19. Present a water-savings plan to your school’s PTA
20. Promote the power of 10%
