Hillsborough River Reservoir Reservoir VR Just downstream of the city of Temple Terrace is the city of Tampa’s Hillsborough River Reservoir. The Hillsborough River Reservoir has served as the city of Tampa’s primary source of drinking water since the mid-1920s. Located behind the Hillsborough River Dam in Sulpher Springs, the reservoir is approximately 1,300 acres and can hold up to 1.2 billion gallons of water! River facts The water is treated at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility before being provided to customers of the Tampa Water Department.

Downstream of the reservoir, Tampa Bay’s tides and the amount of water flowing over the dam influence the Hillsborough River. The water in the river is sometimes fresh and sometimes brackish depending on tides, rainfall and water flowing over the dam.
