Just downstream of the city of Temple Terrace is the city of Tampa’s Hillsborough River Reservoir. The Hillsborough River Reservoir has served as the city of Tampa’s primary source of drinking water since the mid-1920s. Located behind the Hillsborough River Dam in Sulpher Springs, the reservoir is approximately 1,300 acres and can hold up to 1.2 billion gallons of water! The water is treated at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility before being provided to customers of the Tampa Water Department.
